Session I - Methods and Types of Communication

1. Verbal Communication : - It is that style of communication where mostly we interact with others through spoken words and mostly an interactive form of communation.

Pros

-         It is straight forward to express the feeling.

-         It is mostly interactive and interpersonal.

-         It is a speedy form of communication.

-         We get instant feedback.

Cons

-         It is not possible to communicate in different setup.

-         It requires proximity.

-         It is not possible to represent things officially, legally and for other purposes which required recorded information.

-         It is not a complete form of communication.

-         There are emotional barriers.

Q. Why verbal communication is not a complete form of communication?

Ans: - Because it requires other forms of communication for its complete, such as non-verbal, visual and written communication.

2. Non-Verbal communication: - The process of communication in which wordless messages are send or receives between people using cues like gestures, body language, and voice tone etc.

Pros:-

-         It is very easy to demonstrate.

-         It is very useful for conveying message.

-         There is no language barrier.

-         It is very fast.

Cons:-

-          It is not suitable for lengthy messages.

-         An incomplete form of communication.

-         There are chances of misinterpretation.

-         There are cultural and regional differences.

3. Visual Communication:- It is the type of communication in which messages are sent by using non verbal medium such as visual aids, posters, logos, sign-boards, hoardings, etc.

Pros:-

-         It reinforces (supports) other forms of communication.

-         It can explain things which are not possible with words.

-         It clears the barrier of qualification or language.

Cons: -

-         It is comparatively expensive.

-         It requires specialized storing.

-         It is time consuming.

-         It’s not a complete form of communication.

4. Written Communication:- It is a type of communication where messages are sent or receive through written form.

Pros:-

-         It can be stored or recorded permanently.

-         It stands a legal holding.

-         It can be reused, duplicated and used as many time as required.

-         It can be circulated to mass of people.

-         It is suitable for lengthy messages.

Cons:-

-         It is costly.

-         It is time consuming.

-         It has a barrier of qualification or languages.

Do’s of Body Language

-         Standing up with straight back and relaxed postures.

-         Keeping arms by our sides.

-         Sitting with straight spine.

-         Smile on face while entering into a room.

-         Greeting others with a smile.

-         Offering a firm but gentle handshake

Don’t of Body Language

-         Not to lean on the walls or any objects.

-         Not to give fake smile.

-         Not to droop our shoulders.

-         Not to fold our arms over our chest.

-         Not to lean backwards while sitting.

-         Not to keep hands in our pocket while talking.
